Who are we?
Rebel Sparks: We make theatre that burns bright
We are a Nottingham-based company making theatre that lights up our audiences, fans the flames of change and sparks connection. Our shows burn the rulebook by centering female, trans and non-binary characters and setting fire to audience expectations.
Our work is ambitious - made for, by and with communities. We support everyone to join the campfire by breaking down barriers, giving a loudhailer to unheard voices and making the world a little bit brighter.
What we are offering:
The position as Associate Artist will be a two-way support system. We will support the artist with their own work and look for advice and input into our work as a company. We recognise that not everything on offer will be appropriate to all artists and each artist’s journey is unique. However, we wanted to be concrete in detailing some of the things we can offer. -£500 no strings attached funding
This can be used for whatever you feel appropriate. This could include match funding for a funding application, towards a show or R&D (Research and Development), to pay yourself or your staff, or to pay for overheads such as storage or office costs. This money really has ‘no strings attached’.
-2 days a year Consultancy from Hannah Stone, Ria Ashcroft or a fellow Associate- Usually costed at £250 per day.
This may include advice/time: Applying for project funding, Tour booking, Fundraising, Marketing, Dramaturgical support/outside eye, Producing support, Support with budgets, Reading applications/writing letters of support, Creative conversations and anything else as appropriate.
-Free rehearsal space
We will provide rehearsal space subject to availability (some day times at Circus Hub). This can also be used as support in kind @£20 Per hour.
-Recommending you and your work and shouting about you on social media
We will promote your work on facebook, Instagram, twitter and to our mailing list- at least one post per show. But will do more where possible.
-Free tickets for our shows
We will invite you to press nights/offer you a free ticket to all our productions.
-Other
-Lending of equipment such as PA, lighting, aerial equipment, props and costumes and memberships such as Zoom subject to availability.
-Have a Rebel Sparks company email address if required.
What we expect:
The Associate Artists will:
-Support the Artistic Directors in shaping the artistic vision and direction of Rebel Sparks.
-Assist in areas of development such as reading scripts, offering dramaturgical support, attending workshops and readings.
-Be advocates and ambassadors for the organisation.
-Attend quarterly company meetings to update on plans, projects and to gather their thoughts and feedback.
-Watch Rebel Sparks productions, attending Press Night if possible, and provide feedback as requested.
-Read scripts and creative proposals and feedback to the Artistic Directors.
-Support dramaturgical work and providing other specialist artistic support, advice and input as necessary.
-Occasionally participate in outreach work such as running workshops, participating in Q&As, speaking at forums and at other appropriate events
-Be on interview panels if appropriate.
In the interest of clarity should the Associate Artist be asked to do any of the above- they will be paid at £250 per day or £31.25 per hour.
Who can apply?
- We are looking for two female, trans or gender non conforming individuals who work in live performance and who want to develop their practice alongside Rebel Sparks over the next year. This could include theatre writers, directors, designers, circus artists, choreographers, makers, performers etc.
-We would like to work with artists who commit to our locale and the community. You should be from the East Midlands, based here or be able to demonstrate a strong connection here (For example you make most of your work in the area and understand the community).
- We positively encourage disabled people, people of the global majority and LGBTQ+ people to apply.

This should include:
1. A description of your work/practice
Tell us about the work you are excited about making, what drives you as an artist and how this fits with Rebel Sparks’ ethos. You might want to give an example of a recent piece of work or something you are currently exploring in your practice.
2. What or how would you like to develop over the next year
This might include a piece of work you want to make, an area of your practice you’d like to explore or how you’d like to develop professionally.
3. What you would bring to Rebel Sparks
Ideas for how you’d like to input, skills you could share or ideas for the company going forwards.
