Associate Writer/Theatre Maker call out

What we are offering:

A one-year Associate writer/theatre maker position which includes:

-£2,000 development commission

We are looking to commission or invest in further development of writing for the stage by female, trans or non-binary writers or theatre makers from or based in the Midlands. The work must have a connection to Nottingham or The Midlands. (We realise this isn’t a full commission and are not expecting writers to work towards a completed play).

-2 days dramaturgical/mentoring support from Rebel Sparks to get the work to the next stage either with Hannah Stone or Ria Ashcroft. Usually costed at £250 per day.

-Free rehearsal space

We will provide rehearsal space subject to availability (day times at Circus Hub). This can also be used as support in kind @£20 Per hour.

-Recommending you and your work and shouting about you on social media

We will promote your work on facebook, Instagram and to our mailing list- at least one post per show. But will do more where possible.

-Free tickets for our shows

We will invite you to press nights/offer you a free ticket to all our productions.

-Other

-Lending of equipment such as PA, lighting, aerial equipment, laptop, props and costumes and memberships such as Zoom subject to availability.

-Have a Rebel Sparks company email address if required.

What are looking for:

-A playwright/theatre maker who can take a piece of writing to the next stage of development. This may be taking the seed of an idea to outline stage/rough draft or taking an existing script from rough draft to the next draft or a script from an already developed form to a finished draft. We are quite open to how this fund is used.

-We are particularly interested in work with themes that connect with: Climate change, incarceration, redemption, joy, power, friendship, parenthood, relationships, protest, family, love, but are open to work that does not touch on these themes. We are open to plays with music, musicals, gig theatre or circus elements but also straight plays. On this occasion we are not looking for work for children.  

-Ideas which put story at their heart and centre female, trans and non-binary characters.

-The work must have a strong connection to Nottingham or The Midlands or a strong audience appeal. The writer/theatre maker must be based in or have a strong connection to Nottingham or The Midlands.

-A piece of work that Rebel Sparks could fully commission in future and produce following the development stage that ideally, does not already have a director attached.

-A writer/theatre maker who has had at least one full professional theatre production before.

Who can apply?

- We are looking for two female, trans or non-binary writers or theatre makers who want to develop a play alongside Rebel Sparks over the next year.

-A writer or theatre maker based in or with a strong connection to Nottingham or The Midlands.

- We positively encourage disabled people, people of the global majority, working class people and LGBTQ+ people to apply.

Expression of Interest: A max 2 page expression of interest (in Word or as a PDF) or max 6 minute video or voice note.

This should include:

1.              A logline for your play

Give us a sentence or two that tells us what happens in the play.

2.         Who are the characters?

Describe some of the characters at the heart of your play.

3.              What stage is the play at currently?

The play may be only an idea, you may have a first draft or be several drafts in- we don’t mind- just tell us about the development you’ve done so far or where the idea came from.

4.         Why do you want to write this play? What are you excited about/inspired by?

5.         How does this play connect with Nottingham/The Midlands and why will local audiences want to see it?

6.         Tell us about your experience developing new work for the theatre.

AND A script if you have one OR a writing sample of 10 pages OR a 10 minute video of your work.

Dates: Application closes 6th December at midnight. Shortlist announced 18th December. Successful writers announced 22nd January.

Next stage: A panel of core team and associates will read the applications and shortlist writers we are excited by. We may then ask to read more of the idea or meet with you to chat through it. We will then decide who is the right fit for us to work with. We will provide feedback to all shortlisted candidates.
